Privacy notice
What personal information onassian.com handles, why, who helps us handle it and how to ask us about it. The Digest has no newsletter yet, so this notice covers the website only.
We don’t run analytics or advertising trackers, and we set no cookies. The only personal information we ask you for is what you type into the contact form.
Who is responsible
The Onassian Digest at onassian.com, run by its editorial desk. For anything in this notice, write to [email protected].
The contact and rate-card forms
What you type in: your email address and message, and, if you give them, your name, your company and the topic you choose. We also receive the date and time you sent it. The form has a hidden spam-trap field that people never see or fill in.
We use it to read your message and reply: corrections, story tips, advertising and rate-card requests. We don’t add you to any mailing list, and we don’t sell or share your details for marketing.
Server logs and security
Like every website, ours can’t send you a page without seeing the request. When you visit, Cloudflare, our web host, processes your IP address, your browser’s user agent, the address you asked for and the time. It uses them to deliver the page, to keep the site available and to block attacks. We don’t combine this with anything else, and we don’t use it to identify readers.
Our pages also carry Cloudflare’s Network Error Logging header, which lets your browser tell Cloudflare when a connection to the site fails. The report describes the failed request, not you.
We don’t use Cloudflare Web Analytics or any other analytics today. If we switch on Cloudflare Web Analytics, which counts visits without cookies, we will say so here first. To be confirmed
Cookies and browser storage
We set no cookies and store nothing in your browser. Light and dark mode follow your device setting, so we don’t store a preference. Details, including the rare Cloudflare security cookie, are in Cookies and storage.
Who else processes it
- Cloudflare hosts the site, keeps the server logs above and runs the small function that checks a form submission and passes it on. The function does not store your message.
- Web3Forms, a form delivery service, turns your submission into an email. It runs mainly on Amazon Web Services and screens submissions for spam with CleanTalk and Akismet, which may see your email address and IP address.
- IONOS hosts the desk’s inbox, where your email arrives.
- TradingView draws the charts on the Stock Deck page only. A chart loads only when you press “Show chart”; TradingView then receives your IP address and user agent.
These providers may process data outside your country.
How long we keep it
| What | How long |
|---|---|
| Your message in the desk’s inbox | Up to 12 months after our last reply, then deleted To be confirmed |
| The copy held by Web3Forms | Deleted by us within 30 days. Without that step, Web3Forms keeps submissions for up to three years. To be confirmed |
| Cloudflare server and security logs | As set by Cloudflare for our plan To be confirmed |
Your rights
You can ask for a copy of what we hold about you, ask us to correct it or delete it, or object to how we use it. Email [email protected] and tell us which message it concerns. We will reply within 30 days. You can also complain to the data protection authority where you live.
Children
The Digest is written for people who work in and around shipping. It is not aimed at children, and we don’t knowingly collect their information.
Changes
If we change what we collect, for example when a newsletter launches, we will update this notice and the date below before the change takes effect.
